Weights VS Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are commonly used as a weight replacement tool for those who prefer portability, appreciate the range of exercises that can be done with a set of resistance bands or have other considerations such as price, etc. However, should you really go for the bands and ditch the weights? Below are some reasons why weights are better than bands.
Higher Resistance Level
The main reason why most people still stick with weights is because of the level of resistance that it is able to provide. Dumbbells and barbells are able to provide more resistance than many resistance bands available, it is possible to combine mutiple bands to increase the resistance level but there is a limit to the maximum number of bands that can be attached. Thus, for heavy lifters, free weights are a must for them as their strength increases over time.
Ease of Use
The user-friendliness of resistance bands have certainly improved over the years but it is still cumbersome to learn and not as comfortable to use as free weights. The performance of many exercises with resistance bands require special adjustments to body posture which some might find it to be a hassle. For example, when doing shoulder press with bands, the bands might get in the way of your tricep and press against your body. Tricep kickbacks might pose a problem as the feet have to be firmly on the ground to hold the bands.
Many of the exercises that can be done with dumbbells and barbells require accessories in order for them to be performed with the bands, especially legs and chest exercises. Performing lunges with weights is easy, just rest the bar on your shoulder and lunge forward, however, you might need an ankle strap to perform some of the legs exercises. For chest exercises, a door anchor is needed to perform chest flys unlike with dumbbells which can be done on the floor. This means that you might not be able to perform exercises that require accessories in places with no furniture.
You might need some time to adapt to using tha bands due to the steeper learning curve. Free weights on the other hand, is easy to use and many workout programs uses weights as the primary equipment. Even as a beginner who do not have any knowledge on lifting, you can go to the gym and copy what others are doing with their weights.
Dumbbells and barbells are able to last for a very long time. Many rubberised dumbbells are resistant to rusting and is resilient to dropping hence it is very unlikely that you have to replace your dumbbell sets due to wear and tear. Resistance bands on the other hand, is less durable as the bands might snap if you overstretch it (chances of it is low), this means that you might have to replace your bands set more frequently than your weights. Dumbbells and barbells are mostly metallic with some having rubber coating while resistance bands are predominantly made with rubber and plastic which results in a shorter lifespan.
Although there are areas in which free weights are better than resistance bands, bands are still a very effective and inexpensive option for strength training. There are many high quality resistance bands available in singapore that can achieve similar muscle-building effect as free weights.
