How To Gym Properly With Barbells As Equipment
If you want to build up your overall body strength then there is no better solution than a decent barbell workout. Contrary to popular belief; you do not actually need to be that fit to lift a barbell. Most people should be able to cope with the smaller weights quite fine. In fact; I have seen plenty of retired pensioners lift up those smaller barbells! On this page I want to talk to you a little bit about the basics of a barbell workout.
Firstly; if you are going to carry out this type of exercise then it is vital you learn proper lifting technique first. I am not going to type that out here because it is something which you really need to see being done to get it right. There are plenty of videos out there. If you do not lift the weights properly then you are going to be putting your body at risk of serious injury.
Overhead Squat
This is not the easiest exercise to perform with a barbell. It is incredibly effective though. Here you will be targeting not only your shoulder and arm muscles but also your hips and quads. This is something which you may want to try out after injecting a bit of flexibility into your muscles from elsewhere. This will probably take a bit of practice to get right. I have seen nobody being able to accomplish an overhead squat the first time around.
To do this you need to extend the barbell above your head. You can then gradually lower yourself into the squatting position, hold for a short while, and then release. As I said; this is going to be brutal. I am sure that as you become more accomplished with the gym equipment it is going to get easier though.
Deadlift
This is the most popular barbell exercise. With the deadlift you will be lifting the bar into a neutral position. Proper lifting technique is key here because the risk of serious injury is high. With the Deadlift you will be working on your hips and torso. You will need a great deal of flexibility in most muscles to get this right. If you do not then try and start with some smaller weights first. It will help loosen you up before you tackle the deadlift.
Overhead Lift
If you are looking to really give a boost to your upper body then this is the technique that you need to use. Squeeze your glutes and quads as you lift here. It will give you a lot of stability. In my mind this is one of the more difficult lifts to achieve. This is in part down to the fact that you are most likely going to be rocking all over the place as you lift the weight. Most people will probably have a great deal of success starting from smaller weights and working their way up.
If you are looking to boost your strength and in general just get fit then it is vital that you incorporate barbell training into your routine.
