Must-have Gym Equipment in 2014
Working out at home is way better than going to the gym. In case you didn’t catch it, I shared my views on why you shouldn’t go to the gym in my previous post. Home workouts are way more convenient and can be more effective than gym workouts. However, you do need some equipment in order to get started. You do not need to invest a heavy some of money to get effective equipment to start exercising at home. Picking the right tools is key. Below are some of the most essential gym equipment in Singapore.
1. Resistance tools
You will need resistance in order to build muscle (unless you want to do push ups and pull-ups the whole time). Generally there are a few types of equipment that can create resistance: 1. Dumbbells 2. Barbells 3. Resistance bands 4. Medicine balls 5. Kettlebells.
The most popular choice for providing resistance would definitely be dumbbells and resistance bands. Medicine balls and kettlebells are not as popular but they do serve the pupose of providing resistance and is used by many athletes.
Depending on your needs, goals and budget, you can choose to get either a set of dumbbells or resistance bands (comparison here). Note that you will need a SET. A single pair of dumbbell or bands will not be of much help.
2. Stability ball/Gym Bench
One of the most underrated gym equipment would be the stability ball and gym bench. Most people think that they are expensive and unnecessary however, if you really want to get big gains and lift heavy weights, you will need the support from a gym bench. The gym bench allows you to perform many exercises that require very heavy weights like bench press and shoulder press. If a gym bench is too expensive for you, a stability ball will also do the job.
Keep in mind that the stability ball is harder to use and require more balancing.
3. Pull-up bar
Even if you’re not a fan of pull-ups, the pull-up bar is a very effective gym equipment that is affordable and easy to use. You can adjust the bar to a different height and do incline pull-ups, or make it even lower to do a push-up. A pull-up bar costs only $20 and fits on most doors in Singapore.
Push-ups are a staple in almost everyone’s exercise routine so why not find a way to make your push-ups more effective so you get better results from doing them?
Push-up bars allow you to do just that, by increasing the range of motion of your push-ups, you can work a larger area of your chest, increase the flex of the pectoral muscles and force them to grow bigger. The best thing is push-up bars are one of the cheapest gym equipment in singapore.
5. Exercise mat
Not really an equipment but is an essential thing to have if your floor is hard and non-carpeted. If you are using heavy weights and live in HDBs, your neighbours may complain about the loud noises caused by weights landin gon hard solid floor. In addition, if you are to do any push-ups, cardio or ab exercises, an carpet/mat can prevent slipping and protect you from injury.
