Comments Off on 6 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Go to Gym
Why Going the Gym is A Bad Idea
Do you have a gym membership? Are you a frequent gym-goer? Or are you considering going to the gym? Gymnasiums are indeed popular around the world, even in Singapore, with major brands like fitness first having multiple gyms around the country. However most people pay big amounts for their gym membership without knowing the downside of going to gyms. Below are the reasons why gyms are not that good. Note that I’m solely referring to going to gym and not exercising or doing strength training.
1. It’s too crowded
Most gyms in Singapore are crowded, including those in commercial areas and public estates, with the exception of high-end gyms that very few people can afford. While that does not mean that you have to squeeze your way to enter the gym, you will most likely find yourself queing for popular equipment like the treadmill and squat rack. This phenonmenon is more observerable in clubfitt gyms which charge low amounts for entry.
At peak hours, you might spend more time waiting for empty spots instead of exercising. The experience is made worse with some people hogging on to ab machines and benches for a long time.
With the movements and noises in the gym, it is harder to concentrate on your workouts compared to when you are alone. Even with headphones on, there are many occasions where people do silly things or hardcore trainers making load groans that distracts me, If you have a short attention span like me, you might want to get gym equipment and train at home.
3. Not worth the money
The most common reason why some people train at home is that they find gym memberships to be not worth their money. Those with a busy schedule and can hardly make it to the gym more than once a week are charged the same amount as those who frequent the gym daily. Of course, there are some gyms that charge per entry, even so, investing in a set of dumbbells or barbells is many times more worthy in the long run.
4. Traveling time
Consider yourself lucky if you live within walking distance to a gym because few people do. Those who live in condo may disagree with me but many of us with live in flats or private property have to travel for 20-30mins on average to the nearest gym. The time is longer if you have to take public transport. But 20-30mins itself is already the time of my usual workout. Want to save time and get back to your daily routine? Build your own home gym and train whenver you want.
Going to the gym is bad for your health. According to research, more than 75% of regular gym-goers are aware of the sweat left on equipment. What is shocking is that 50% of people who go to gyms use other people’s towels and 20% work out with a flu or cold! Even if you do not care much about hygiene, the disease-causing germs on treadmills, dumbbell bars, benches can be the reason for your latest flu.
In addition, a great majority of people do not use deodorant while exercising (who cares about how they smell anyway) which means that you may occassionally catch a whiff of unbearable stench when someone with extreme body odour enters the gym.
If going to the gym is more effectice than working out at home, I would go to the gym every day. Truth is, its not. Most people go to the gym because their friends are there and they go there to socialise. If you are serious about getting results, invest in simple strength training or cardio equipment and exercise at home. Home fitness DVDs like P90X by Tony Horton is extremely popular and effective.
Of course, everyone is subjected to their own opinions, there are still hoards of people going to the gym everyday. I hope that the next time you consider going to the gym, you are aware of the disadvantages.
